Walks on the Isle of Wight: Scenic Routes to Explore from Tapnell Farm
Walkers, welcome to our Island paradise. Whether you're here for serious hiking or want to get active with the kids, you'll find plenty of suitable walks on the Isle of Wight.
From coastal cliffs to rolling downs and wildlife-rich nature reserves, there's plenty to discover across the Island's 500 miles of footpaths.
That's why we've kept things simple. Rather than create an exhaustive (and exhausting) list of Isle of Wight walking routes, we're giving you a practical guide to walking this very special Island.
Real routes from locals who love the place – all within easy reach of Tapnell Farm. If you're planning an Isle of Wight walking holiday, this is the best place to start.
Why the Isle of Wight is So Good for Walking
The Isle of Wight is a compact, manageable kind of place – just under 150 square miles. Yet within those boundaries, you'll find some of the UK's most varied landscapes, from beaches and coastal cliffs to our famous chalk downs and chines.
You'll also find some 500 miles of walking trails. Some, like the Isle of Wight Coastal Path, are deservedly well-known. Others are lesser-trodden but no less scenic. In any case, with such variety on offer, it's easy to choose a walk of the right length and difficulty to suit everyone (kids included).
The Island is also home to the Isle of Wight Walking Festival – a twice-yearly event featuring guided walks from passionate local guides. Held in spring and autumn, it's a great excuse to dust off those walking boots.
Start Close to Tapnell: Walk the Tapnell Trail
When you stay at Tapnell Farm, you don't have to go far to find one of the best Isle of Wight walks.
The Tapnell Trail wildlife walk runs right through the middle of our farm. This 6.5-mile circular route takes you up onto the downs before winding back through peaceful farms and fields. Along the way, you'll enjoy stunning views of the Island's south coast and the original 1970 Isle of Wight Festival site.
Not only is it on our doorstep, but it's also suitable for walkers of all abilities. One of the finest – and most convenient – family walks on the Isle of Wight, we think.
Classic Coastal Walks: Tennyson Down, The Needles and Freshwater Bay
The West Wight region is home to some of the Island's most awe-inspiring coastal scenery. It's also where you'll find some of the most rewarding Isle of Wight coastal walks.
Take the Tennyson Down trail, a seven-mile circular ramble that takes you across this famed hill all the way to the Island's southwesterly tip. It's a challenging route, but one worth conquering for its view of the Needles – a parade of chalk stacks jutting proudly from the sea near Alum Bay.
For an easier option, you can enjoy the view from the Freshwater Bay to the Needles circular route. At six miles, it's still challenging, but slightly shorter – and just as scenic.
Shorter Scenic Walks for a Relaxed Island Day
Not every walk needs to be a half-day trek.
Fancy rambling away a spare morning or afternoon? Try one of our favourite short walks on the Isle of Wight – the River Yar Circular Walk. This flat, circular trail starts in Yarmouth and traces the route of a disused railway line before snaking back through bucolic countryside. The scenery is beautiful, but it can get muddy. You may want to bring wellies.
Or go for an even shorter option. The Totland to Colwell walk takes you on a gentle stroll between two pretty beaches. As a round trip, it measures a tidy mile – and with refreshments available at either end, it's a great option for kids. Take extra care, though – there are no railings on the promenade, so it might not be suitable for wobbly toddlers.
Countryside, Wildlife and Nature Reserve Walks
There's a reason the Isle of Wight is known for its coastal walks. But don't forget to head inland, too. The countryside is a little less dramatic, but it makes up for that with its quiet, peaceful beauty.
The Estuary Newton walk is a great place to start, offering an easy 3.6-mile stroll through the Island's only Nature Reserve. With butterflies in spring and migratory birds in the cooler months, it's one for the wildlife spotters.
Other options include the Mottistone Common walk (2.8 miles) through the National Trust's Mottistone Estate and the refreshingly gentle Freshwater Way (5 miles). The latter route blends coast and countryside, taking you from bay to bay through wildlife-rich saltmarshes.
Planning Your Isle of Wight Walks Sensibly
As with any outdoor activity, walking on the Isle of Wight is best enjoyed with a bit of sensible preparation.
Here are some tips to help you stay safe, comfortable and ready for anything:
🗺️ Review local guidance before setting off to avoid route closures or safety concerns.
🚶 Plan for your ability by choosing routes of a sensible length and difficulty.
🥾 Wear sturdy walking boots – a must, even on shorter walks.
🌧️ Prepare for bad weather by packing a breathable waterproof jacket, a warm hat and gloves and a fully charged phone.
🌊 Check tide times if you're walking by the coast.
🥤 Plan refreshment stops – there are plenty of pubs and cafes around the Island where you can fuel up and stay hydrated. Why not make time for some post-walk food at The Cow Restaurant?
Bonus tip: if you're visiting in autumn, don't miss the Isle of Wight Walking Festival. Running from 3 to 11 October 2026, it promises themed trails and guided walks through some of the Isle of Wight's most fascinating landscapes.
