Top 5 Best Family‑Friendly Beaches on the Isle of Wight

1. Compton Bay

Just down the road from Tapnell Farm lies two miles of glorious sandy beach, rolling seas and tumbling sandstone cliffs. At low tide, the seas pull back to reveal seemingly endless golden and dark sands, and the possibility of spotting dinosaur footprints imprinted in the rocks.

There is a world of nature-based fun to be found at Compton Bay. The smooth, soft sands are perfect for ball games, sandcastles and fossil hunting. For slightly older families, this is a superb spot for surfing, bodyboarding and even kite surfing. And make sure you stay for sunset on a clear day.

There are no facilities at Compton Bay, although an ice cream/refreshments van is often nearby in the summer months.

2. Freshwater Bay

Just around the corner from the island’s iconic Needles, Freshwater Bay is one of the best beaches on the Isle of Wight for snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding. As the name suggests, the waters are clear and deep, and the famous Freshwater Caves are just waiting to be explored by kayak.

Set between towering white chalk cliffs, the sand, flint and pebble beach is pockmarked with exciting rockpools and small caves to explore at low tide - but be careful not to get cut off by rising waves. There’s plenty to explore above the bay, too. Wander Tennyson Down for expansive views across the coastline, or discover Dimbola Museum and Galleries, celebrating the famous Victorian photographer.

3. Colwell Bay

For a family day out to the beach, it’s hard to beat the charm of Colwell Bay. With calm, shallow waters, a soft, sandy shingle beach and plenty of facilities, you’ve got all the ingredients for a fun-filled trip to the seaside. Hire a deckchair, walk the pushchair-friendly promenade, and head out for a splash in the sea.

Wander the sea wall along to Totland Beach (next on our list), and you’ll be rewarded with sweeping scenes across the Solent. Spot sea yachts sailing past and marvel at striking views of Hurst Castle and the former Fort Albert gun tower - a brilliant accessible beach for all ages.

4. Totland Bay

By the charming village of Totland, this local beach is popular with visitors and locals, with a calmer, quieter atmosphere. Above all else, this is one of the best beaches on the Isle of Wight for sunset spotting. As the sun dips down over the Dorset coast, the sky lights up in striking violets and pinks.  

A reminder of busier days can be seen to the south end of the beach, where the remains of Totland Pier still rise out the water. There’s a handy cafe nearby to refresh your beach explorations and rockpools to discover when the tide is out (be sure to check times as the beach almost disappears at high tide).

5. Alum Bay

Backed by world-famous coloured sands, Alum Bay is unquestionably one of the most picturesque beaches on the Isle of Wight. 21 different shades of natural colour provide a dramatic backdrop with stunning views over the Solent. While a mainly shingle beach, the crystal clear waters are enjoyed by swimmers and paddlers alike.

Above Alum Bay are the stunning views across the famous chalk stacks called the Needles and plenty of facilities and attractions, including the iconic chair lift and boat trips. This makes Alum Bay one of the busiest beaches on the list, but a truly unique sight that simply must be experienced.
